Tasteful Tablescaping
By the time Christmas day arrives, some of us have had our fill of blinking lights, bright colors, and hectic bustle. A bit of serenity is in order, perhaps before the wrapping paper starts flying or after it has settled. That’s the atmosphere this tablescape creates—a feeling of calm and relaxed elegance.
A linen tablecloth in simple cream sets the stage, but any neutral color will do. No runners, no extras, just beautiful linen—an extra-special touch we rarely allow ourselves at the table. Sparkling, beaded place mats are the next layer of texture—but not a sparkle that distracts or overwhelms. These place mats just add some subtle shine next to the weave of the tablecloth.
The tableware is classic and simple. Rarely is our grandmother’s finest china sporting a garish color, so bring out your favorite heirloom dishes to enjoy on this special occasion. Cloth napkins with a subtle silver-colored band of trim echo the metal glints of the place mat. A pretty sprig of hypericum berries brings in a pleasing palette of Christmas colors.
Three rustic metal urns create the foundation for an understated centerpiece. Filled with potted plants or small evergreens, the urns go from basic to beautiful with the addition of fresh flowers. White or cream roses combine with reindeer moss to complete the holiday arrangement.
Finally, choose some patterned, cream-colored paper for place cards. Pick up a box of small ornament balls, and attach to place cards with satin ribbon. Set at each guest’s place for a sophisticated finishing touch.
